Solution :

Point the JAVA_HOME variable to correct value in  conf/hbase-env.sh

Example :

smartechies.mac $ cat ~/.profile | grep JAVA_HOME
export JAVA_HOME=/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk1.8.0_121.jdk/Contents/Home
#export JAVA_HOME=/usr/libexec/java_home

smartechies.mac $ cat /usr/local/Cellar/hbase/1.2.6/libexec/conf/hbase-env.sh | grep JAVA_HOME
#export JAVA_HOME=”$(/usr/libexec/java_home)”

smartechies.mac$ hbase shell
